the rules of the game

sportpark de wierden, almere-haven, 2008

In this game, agents behave freely under few simple design rules. They decide where growth emerges. They can form urban blocks and compose an unforeseen urban program -where shops concentrate, where a dance school or a cooking atelier find place-. Next, designers insert necessary connections or nodes. This interactive method targets at an optimized network of streets, public, private and collective spaces, often missed in highly top-down and bottom-up organized regimes.

description of the game

game description

100 households of the existing city will be interviewed during the masterclass. This will form the database for an urban program and user preferences.

this data will be translated into user profiles and will be published on google earth.

every participant represents interviewed households: a, b, c…

every participant generates 4 new household profiles based on changing variations –size, program, sharing, typology-: a1, a2, a3, a4.

every participant is free to negotiate [on creating larger units, common programs such as a pool, a sauna, or a collective office]

every participant plays in a sequence

there no pre-defined urban block typologies

the urban network emerges as the urban program evolves

design rules

1. every existing building needs to respected in terms of access, air, light.

2. user profiles with shared program have priority over without. [in terms of location choice, land costs]
