The Game triggered curious reactions from the municipality as a not-yet-tested planning tool. At this moment we are busy progressing the outcome as a booklet during the Architecture Biennial Rotterdam 2009 'Open City'.

[...] As far as special layers are concerned - historical, or data for specific projects - google still has the edge, as there is no way yet do to that in OSM. I hope this will be possible soon. A basic way to do collaborative mapping projects with google maps is by creating a kml layers via “My Maps” at maps.google.com, if you have a google maps account. I recently implemented that for a TU Delft workshop, see the example here. [...]

The housing blocks on this picture are set to be designed this way to protect from the sandstorms in the desolate waste that Almere was when these first developments took place.

The blok of new houses in the upper part of the picture where built more resently after the a public elementry school burned down. This school had a very important role as an unofficial community centre for the fist waves of pioneers.

Gülensu had a characteristic of being one of the first public domain area where opened to settlement, by the reason the fact that it was close to many fabrics and industrial areas in Kartal and Tuzla.

Gülensu gained legal status as a part og Gülsuyu district in 1956. In the wake of being made into a group possessing, inhabitants could success to reach services (drinking water, canalization…) and this process proved the power of public spirit and urban conflict which is mostly based on citizentry (hemşerilik)

Most part of the settlement was legalized after 1985 with an indemnity law and the improvement plans was made by Kartal Municipality and Yıldız Technical University. Gülensu District has been aparted from Gülsuyu District since an improvement plan that is accepted in 1989. In the same year, a new improvement plan was formed and then land certificates distributed by Kartal Municipality.

The last plan that was accepted by municipality in 2004, encountered with urban opposition in Gülensu. As a result of stream of protests and oppositions, İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality accepted to make another plan and the area where encounters Gülensu, Başıbüyük and Gülsuyu, is declared as an “urban renewal” area.

After these processes, street delegates elected and district commission was elected by inhabitants. A technical commission was formed by the people who can contribute in planning process and they started to make workshops based on participation and public spirit...

Almere Stadplan is the part of large New Urban Town schemes. I happen to be a strange visitor here but eventually got adjusted with the surroundings. the design of transition of spaces and division of same is meticulous. However, rightly said, it lacks the social cohesion and vernacular in terms of built form. Must say this is a fantastic work of Product Design at its best.
One conclusion from this can be drawn that the people are still affectionated by traditional built forms and that entirely cannot be furbished through advance designs and i feel, that's the real challenge in new town scheme. The technology and industrial design can be used in emerging countries to augment the solution.
