Gulensu [started out in the late 60’s and saw an accelerated growth in mid 70’s] was a result of influx into metropolitan cities of turkey; in this case Istanbul. The inhabitants organized an ever-evolving environment mainly based on their conventional building knowledge. The settlement grew in the absence of professional knowledge.

Gülensu had a characteristic of being one of the first public domain area where opened to settlement, by the reason the fact that it was close to many fabrics and industrial areas in Kartal and Tuzla.
Gülensu gained legal status as a part og Gülsuyu district in 1956. In the wake of being made into a group possessing, inhabitants could success to reach services (drinking water, canalization…) and this process proved the power of public spirit and urban conflict which is mostly based on citizentry (hemşerilik)
Most part of the settlement was legalized after 1985 with an indemnity law and the improvement plans was made by Kartal Municipality and Yıldız Technical University. Gülensu District has been aparted from Gülsuyu District since an improvement plan that is accepted in 1989. In the same year, a new improvement plan was formed and then land certificates distributed by Kartal Municipality.
The last plan that was accepted by municipality in 2004, encountered with urban opposition in Gülensu. As a result of stream of protests and oppositions, İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality accepted to make another plan and the area where encounters Gülensu, Başıbüyük and Gülsuyu, is declared as an “urban renewal” area.
After these processes, street delegates elected and district commission was elected by inhabitants. A technical commission was formed by the people who can contribute in planning process and they started to make workshops based on participation and public spirit…
