almere haven
August 5th, 2008

Almere-Haven [1976] was born as a reaction to postwar modernistic urban design schemes. An idealistic team of planners, sociologists and architects designed an environment that is low rise, pedestrian oriented, and as democratic as possible by providing choice for an immense formal diversity.

The housing blocks on this picture are set to be designed this way to protect from the sandstorms in the desolate waste that Almere was when these first developments took place.

The blok of new houses in the upper part of the picture where built more resently after the a public elementry school burned down. This school had a very important role as an unofficial community centre for the fist waves of pioneers.
